| This
chart depicts the timber cycle on the Flathead National Forest
in Montana in millions of board feet. The ratios
between growth, mortality and harvest are typical of other
forests in Region 1. The whole pie represents total annual
growth.
Unchecked growth in vegetation such as this
results in dense, overstocked forests with a high percentage of
dead fire fuels. We either log the excess growth and
remove the dead material or it will burn. |

| The picture in the banner was taken during the
first sping runoff after the Wedge and the Roberts fires.
The North Fork on the left carries sediment from
those fire areas. The South and Middle Forks are running
clean.
The picture to the left was taken just a few miles
from the start of the Moose Fire in 2001. Since 1988 four
other major fires have burnt in this same area.
All but one crossed the North Fork of the Flathead
River into Glacier National Park, shown in the background.
The brown trees in both pictures are fire killed |
